Cards Arizona Fall League Notebook: 10/22/14

Reliever Sam Tuivailala tossed a scoreless eighth inning in yet another Javelinas loss on Tuesday.

Results from the game played Tuesday, October 21st.

Peoria 0 at Salt River 5

The Javelinas offense was a no-show on Tuesday as Peoria (3-8-2) was blanked by Salt River 5-0.

The bats managed just two hits and no walks off a quartet of Rafters’ hurlers, led by the Astros’ Vincent Velasquez (W, 1-1, 5.63). Designated hitter Francisco Lindor (CLE) managed one hit but was erased from the base paths trying to steal second. The team’s other safety came from first baseman Patrick Leonard (TB), who singled in three at bats.

C.J. McElroy, St. Louis’ only position player to appear, was hitless in two at bats with a strikeout. McElroy hit ninth and played in left.

Atlanta’s Aaron Northcraft suffered his second loss in three decisions, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk in 3 1/3. Both tallies crossed in the second. Zach Cooper (TB), Colton Reavis (TB) and lefty Daniel Stumpf (KC) each permitted a run during their time on the mound, although Stumpf’s was unearned. It was Stumpf’s Arizona Fall League debut as a roster replacement for fellow Royal Kyle Zimmer.

Sam Tuivailala, the only Javelinas pitcher to not be scored upon, took the ball from Stumpf and tossed a clean eighth. The righty, who turned 22 on the 19th, issued a free pass to the lead-off batter but caught Salt River’s seventh-place hitter looking at strike three. Tuivailala’s final two batters lined out to short and grounded out, 4-3.

Wednesday’s game: at Glendale (5-6), 12:35 pm MST, Miguel Almonte (KC) (0-0, 1.69)
