Jordan Smith’s perfect day at the plate led the Javelinas to a 9-4 victory over Mesa (8-7). It is only the fourth win in 12 contests for Peoria, with two games having ended in a tie.
The Cleveland outfielder went 3-for-3 with a double, run scored and two RBIs, leading his team’s 11-hit attack. Shortstop Raul Mondesi (KC) and first baseman Patrick Leonard (TB) each added two hits, Mondesi doubling once while touching home twice out of the lead-off slot. Leonard scored one and drove in another. No Cardinals position player took part.
Kansas City southpaw Daniel Stumpf picked up his first win in his second AFL appearance, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless frames in support of starter Dylan Baker (CLE). Stumpf retired eight of nine batters, the only one reaching via a hit batsman in the third, which was a good thing since he inherited a bases-loaded, one-out mess from Baker.
Baker simply did not have it, yielding four runs on three hits and three free passes that produced four runs. The final run scored on a sac fly under Stumpf’s watch. Three more relievers followed Stumpf, none from St. Louis’ organization.
Saturday’s game: at Salt River (12-3-1), 12:35 pm MST, Jaime Schultz (TB) (0-3, 8.68)
