Peoria (5-10-2) mounted a modest two-game winning streak with a 6-3 victory at Salt River on Saturday. The Javelinas are still just two games out of first place in the West Division.
The Javs took a 3-0 lead in the fourth, only to blow the edge in the fifth. Peoria then came right back with two in the sixth and added an insurance run in the ninth.
Five of Peoria’s nine hits were doubles, including two each from Friday’s star, right fielder Jordan Smith (CLE), and DH Hunter Dozier (KC). Catcher Cody Stanley, batting cleanup, collected the other two-base hit, then scored the go-ahead tally in the sixth.
Wilson singled in four at-bats. Valera walked, singled, struck out, hit a sacrifice fly and scored twice. McElroy went 0-for-2 with a strikeout, but contributed a pair of sacrifices.
Sam Tuivailala pitched the eighth and ninth, walking none and yielding a harmless single. The right-hander fanned four, including the side, all swinging, in the ninth, notching his second AFL save.
Reliever Ryne Harper of the Braves, Peoria’s pitcher of record in the sixth, earned the win, his second of the AFL campaign. The loser was Salt River and Miami reliever Edgar Olmos (0-1).
