One of the highlights of the annual Arizona Fall League schedule is their all-star contest, named the AFL Fall Stars Game. On Monday, rosters for the East and West, to face off this Saturday at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Arizona, were announced.
Representing the St. Louis Cardinals’ contingent of seven players assigned to the AFL is West reliever Sam Tuivailala. The right-hander, who celebrated his 22nd birthday one week ago, is already known to many Cardinals fans based on his rapid rise through the system. Though the hard-thrower opened the 2014 season at A-Advanced Palm Beach, he concluded it three levels above, with St. Louis.
In Arizona, the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder has thrown eight innings over six appearances, collecting two saves. “Tui” has allowed just one run on five hits and three walks. He fanned seven while holding some very good hitters to a collective .172 batting average.
The ninth annual Fall Stars Game can be seen on MLB Network and heard on MLB Network Radio starting at 5 PM local time on Saturday, November 1. Three weeks of AFL action is already in the books, with three more remaining before the league title game on November 15th.
Leonda Markee’s Cardinals AFL Notebooks are the best way to keep track of the daily action from the AFL. Game recaps, links to box scores and of course, all the Cardinals highlights are free for all to read six mornings a week here at The Cardinal Nation.
As is the case each year, I am heading to Arizona and will be reporting from the Fall Stars Game as well as touching base with all the Cardinals players assigned to the Peoria Javelinas plus pitching coach Jason Simontacchi.
