A quartet of Cardinals paced Peoria (8-12-2) to a sweet 8-3 win over Surprise on Halloween afternoon.
Breyvic Valera’s 3-for-4 effort in the lead-off slot led the Javelinas’ 14-hit attack. The third baseman accounted for four tallies, doubling once with a walk, two runs scored and two knocked in. Valera was caught in his one steal attempt.
Clean-up batter and catcher Cody Stanley doubled twice in three at bats with a base-on-balls, scoring once and driving in two. First baseman Jacob Wilson, who followed right behind Stanley in the line-up, went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
All of that offense made a winner out of Rays’ hurler Jaime Schultz who pitched well enough to not need the largess. Schultz fanned seven over five innings, holding the Saguaros (9-12-1) to three hits and two free passes. The righty’s only tally surrendered came via a solo bomb in the fourth.
St. Louis’ Chris Perry kept Surprise off the board in the sixth, notching a swinging K plus two line outs amidst one walk. Perry rebounded from a shaky performance against Scottsdale on the 27th in which he permitted three runs while recording just one out.
Boston right-hander Keith Couch was charged with his second loss in four decisions, yielding four runs on seven hits and two base-on-balls through four. The game remained relatively close until Peoria pushed across three in the home half of the eighth off righty Matt Brazis (SEA).
