Results from the game played Monday, November 3rd.
The Javelinas built a 5-0 lead through three then held on, resulting in a narrow 6-5 victory over the Scorpions. The win keeps Peoria (9-12-2) tied with Glendale for second, a half of a game behind Surprise in the West Division while Scottsdale (10-13) falls to 6 ½ back of Salt River in the East.
Rays first baseman Patrick Leonard was a one-man wrecking crew out of the five hole, going 3-for-4 with two solo bombs and three RBI. Clean-up batter Cody Stanley, the only other member of the Javelinas with more than one of nine team hits, singled twice in four at bats. Peoria’s designated hitter scored one and knocked in another.
Third baseman Jacob Wilson’s only hit in four at bats was a line drive single in the first that brought Stanley across. Wilson struck out in two of his three subsequent at bats while hitting sixth.
C.J. McElroy, the last of St. Louis’ three prospects to play on Monday, also got into the scoring action. McElroy began the second with a sharp grounder that deflected off the glove of the Scorpions’ third baseman into left, bringing the nine hole batter to first. He advanced on a ground out and raced home on a single to left by Edward Salcedo (ATL). That was McElroy’s only hit in four at bats.
Kansas City right-hander Miguel Almonte held the opposition to a tally on five hits and a walk over 3 2/3, evening his record to 1-1. Almonte struck out five. Brandon Cunniff (ATL), Peoria’s sixth and final hurler of the day, picked up his second save despite surrendering two runs on two hits and two free passes in the ninth. Phillies southpaw Adam Morgan (L, 1-1) was charged with the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits and a base-on-balls over three.
Tuesday’s game: at Scottsdale, 12:35 pm MST, Tyrell Jenkins (0-2, 1.56)
