Jacob Wilson transformed walks into runs as Peoria (11-13-2) downed Scottsdale 5-3. The Javelinas remain a half game out of first behind Surprise in the West division.
Wilson, the number two bat, opened both the fourth and sixth by working a free pass, each time coming around to score. Francisco Lindor (CLE) doubled him in from first to knot the score at 1-1 prior to Peoria taking a 2-1 lead before the inning’s finish when Lindor crossed on a sac fly by catcher Tony Wolters (CLE).
It was déjà vu in the sixth when the second baseman again walked to begin the frame. Lindor singled him to second and Cody Stanley’s hit-by-pitch jammed the sacks full. Wilson came home on a base-on-balls issued to the Royals’ Hunter Dozier, the first of three tallies to cross. The 24-year-old doubled to kick off the seventh, his seventh two-bagger of the AFL season, but was left there.
Stanley played his part in the win on a 1-for-3 performance with a run scored. Prior to the aforementioned plunking, Stanley reached on a fourth-inning fielder’s choice that advanced Lindor to third, putting the latter in position to score. The first baseman and clean-up batter scored his team’s final run via C.J. McElroy’s sixth-inning hit, a soft grounder to short that McElroy beat out and allowed Stanley to come home from third. McElroy went 1-for-3 with that RBI and a strikeout in the nine hole. He played left.
Tampa Bay right-hander Jaime Schultz (W, 2-3) worked around four bases-on-balls in 4 2/3 by giving up just one hit, resulting in one run that was unearned due to his own throwing error on an attempted pickoff. Schultz fanned five.
Sam Tuivailala, the fifth Peoria hurler, faced off against Scottsdale’s sixth hole bat to start the ninth, retiring him on a 6-3 groundout. After issuing a free pass, the righty, who turned 22 last month, ended the game on a fly out and swinging K, notching his fourth save. Tuivailala has surrendered only one earned run in 10 outings during his time in the Arizona Fall League and that was back on October 17th. The only other appearance in which he has been scored upon was an unearned run on October 30th.
Friday’s game: vs. first-place (East) Salt River (16-7-3), 12:35 pm MST, Aaron Northcraft (ATL) (1-3, 3.14)
