Jacob Wilson’s pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth gave the Javelinas a 5-4 walk-off victory over Salt River.
Pinch hitting for fellow St. Louis stable hand C.J. McElroy, Wilson lined a single into right, driving in Bubba Starling (KC) after the latter banged out a lead-off double. It was Starling’s fielding error in the top of the frame with Peoria (12-13-2) up 4-2 that allowed the first batter to reach. A walk, sac bunt and two-out single later, there was a tie game on two unearned tallies.
All of the Rafters’ ninth-inning offense came off the Braves’ Brandon Cunniff (BS, 1) (W, 2-0) in his only inning on the bump. Right-hander Tyson Perez (HOU) was charged with his first loss in as many decisions.
Mitch Harris worked the sixth but did not come through it unscathed. The righty surrendered a two-out solo shot to his opponents’ clean-up hitter followed by a double. Harris escaped on a 6-3 groundout. It is the second time the Navy vet has been scored upon in his last three outings.
McElroy, the only Cardinals’ prospect in the starting line-up, singled once in three at bats in the nine hole. The left fielder beat out a slow roller to short in his first at bat, following that up with his sixth steal of the AFL season. McElroy advanced to third on a groundout but was stranded there. He was caught looking in the fifth and grounded into a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded that ended the sixth.
Saturday’s game: at Salt River (16-8-3), 12:35 pm MST, Miguel Almonte (KC) (1-1, 2.40)
