Mike Shildt on Player Development Success

Springfield Cardinals manager Mike Shildt on how the organization assesses development progress. The conclusion of TCN’s exclusive seven-part interview series.

In Part 7, the final installment of our exclusive seven-part interview series with Mike Shildt, the Springfield Cardinals manager ties it all together with a discussion about the relationship between player development and how to win and be winning players.

Also covered is the importance of players showing progress during the season and being fundamentally sound. Finally, the need for them to be ready to contribute when called to the majors, while taking their development cues from St. Louis is outlined.

We saw two prime examples in 2014, as pitchers Marco Gonzales and Sam Tuivailala were both still at A-Advanced Palm Beach in May, only to reach St. Louis later in the season. The lefty Gonzales remained on the active roster throughout the post-season, while Tuivailala is currently leading the Arizona Fall League in saves.
