Peoria’s offense pounded out 12 hits on the way to a 10-4 shellacking of division rival Surprise. The team’s fourth straight win vaulted Peoria (14-13-2) into the West Division lead by a half-game lead over the Saguaros.
With St. Louis general manager John Mozeliak and director of scouting Dan Kantrovitz observing, a sextet of Cardinals’ prospects took part. Clean-up batter Cody Stanley was the most productive of the three position players, going 1-for-2 with a triple, three walks, two runs scored and two driven in as the designated hitter.
Left fielder C.J. McElroy singled once in three at bats with a base-on-balls out of the nine hole while second baseman Jacob Wilson went 1-for-5 while touching home once as the number two bat. Wilson swiped his second bag but McElroy was caught stealing once and was picked off another time.
Tyrell Jenkins (W, 2-2) fanned four in four frames, giving up single scores in the first and second innings on four hits and two free passes. The righty threw 76 pitches, 46 for strikes, with three ground- and one fly-ball out.
Chris Perry began the ninth with his team up 10-2 but was unable to retire any of the three batters faced. A walk, single and double yielded by the 24-year-old let one run across and runners at second and third for Mitch Harris to handle. Harris recorded three straight outs via called strikeout, RBI groundout to first and fly out to left. Perry later told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he is battling right shoulder stiffness and his season is done.
Tuesday’s game: at Mesa (14-13-1), 2:35 pm MST, Jaime Schultz (TB) (2-3, 5.01)
