Cardinals Recall Lyons, Option Out Tuivailala

The St. Louis Cardinals added their Tuesday starting pitcher, Tyler Lyons, and returned Sam Tuivailala to Memphis.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s game with the Chicago Cubs that they have recalled left-handed pitcher Tyler Lyons from Memphis (AAA) and he will make the start tonight in the second game of the four-game series. The team also announced that right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala was optioned to Memphis following last night’s game to make room for Lyons on the 25-man active roster.

Lyons, 27, was 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA in four starts this season for the Triple-A Redbirds with 26 strikeouts in 21.2 innings pitched. The 6-4, 200-pound lefty blanked Round Rock for 8.0 IP in his most recent start (April 28).

A native of Lubbock, Texas, Lyons owns a career mark of 2-8, 4.62 ERA in 23 games (12 games started) with 79 strikeouts in 89.2 IP. He worked 4.2 scoreless innings in relief, striking out a career-high eight, in Game 1 of day/night double-header vs. the Cubs on Aug. 30, 2014.

Lyons has been assigned uniform no. 70.

Brian Walton’s take

These moves were expected.

After fellow lefty Tim Cooney was unimpressive in his trial start in injured Adam Wainwright’s rotation spot, now Lyons is being given a shot. A dependable Triple-A starter for almost four years, Lyons has yet to be able to make the next step and stick with St. Louis. With Marco Gonzales likely still a couple of weeks away and Jaime Garcia still rehabbing, this may be one of Lyons’ best chances to show he belongs in the bigs.

When Tuivailala is on, he is impressive, but still lacks the experience to be consistent night after night. After yielding a home run in his two innings of work Sunday, the 22-year-old has given up three long balls in his three career MLB innings to go with two walks and three strikeouts. After more seasoning, Tuivailala will surely be back.
