One could excuse veteran St. Louis Cardinals minor league manager Johnny Rodriguez if he rooted for one member of the Pittsburgh Pirates during this past weekend’s series between the two rivals, held in the Steel City. After all, his son Sean is an infielder with the Bucs, having moved into the National League Central Division from Tampa Bay this season.
However, the primary subject on Johnny Rodriguez’ mind these days is the progress of over 70 minor leaguers in the Cardinals extended spring training camp in Jupiter, Florida. As manager of Johnson City in 2014, Rodriguez managed the White squad in EST. After his short-season club won the Appalachian League title, he was moved up to State College for 2015. As a result, Rodriguez is leading the Red squad this spring, which has more of the older players in camp. (For EST rosters, click here.)
In the following interview, held in Jupiter, Florida, Rodriguez discusses some of the standout hitters and pitchers on both the Red and White squads during 2015 EST. One such player is catcher Joshua Lopez, pictured in the main photo above.
