The St. Louis Cardinals organization and I disagreed in our respective designations of the system-wide Pitcher of the Month for April.
I felt the numbers supported a less-recognized, lower-level pitcher in Peoria’s Daniel Poncedeleon, while the Cardinals selected top prospect Alex Reyes. In his first month in the Florida State League, the latter, just 20 years of age, was blowing away hitters with a strikeout rate of 15.4 per nine innings. Reports indicate that the right-hander has been holding his upper-90s velocity into the middle innings.
Still, I was concerned about Reyes’ walks, as he issued 11 over his first three starts, making his rate a very high 5.8 free passes per nine. That has changed in the three starts since. Including a masterful performance Monday night that included 11 strikeouts and one walk in six innings, Reyes issued just four free passes in total over his most recent trio of outings. His 2015 ERA is 1.95 to go with his MiLB-best 52 Ks in 32 1/3 innings.
In the following interview, Reyes discusses his standout 2014, his off-season training plans, his invitation to STEP camp and his MLB debut during spring training as well as his fast start with the A-Advanced Palm Beach Cardinals here in 2015.
