Cardinals Make Another Move with Rowan Wick

The former catcher is now a former outfielder, as well, learning how to become a professional pitcher.

A strong-armed catcher when taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the ninth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, Rowan Wick showed off his plus throwing arm in a new way once converted to the outfield during the summer of 2013. Now, The Cardinal Nation has learned another position change is in the works for the 22-year-old, this time to the mound.

Last season, the British Columbia native drew national notice with his slugging. Wick was on fire at State College, tying for the New York-Penn League lead in home runs with 14 despite being promoted with a month of the season remaining.

The left-handed hitter struggled in his arrival in the Midwest League, however, striking out 60 times in his 141 at-bats (42.6 percent) and hitting .220 for Peoria. Still, he finished 2014 with the seventh-highest slugging percentage in all of Minor League Baseball (.608) and 12 outfield assists.

The Cardinals challenged Wick again this spring, placing him one rung up in the Florida State League. The strikeout problems continued as he whiffed 50 times in 126 at-bats (39.7 percent) and batted just .198 through 33 games with Palm Beach.

As reported on Thursday here at The Cardinal Nation, Wick has been transferred to Cardinals extended spring training camp, also located in Jupiter, Florida.

The new news is that his mission there is not to fine tune his bat, but instead to begin a new position conversion – this time to pitching.

EST continues for just two weeks more before short-season ball begins. It will be interesting to see at what level of play Wick the pitcher makes his official debut.

Could the organization have another Jason Motte in their midst or will he become the next Robert Stock? Only time will tell…
