When doing research on St. Louis Cardinals minor league Players/Pitchers of the Month, I generate lists of players who would eventually get consideration for the award. For the month of May, my list of players to be considered was considerably shorter than its pitching counterpart. The Cardinals minor league affiliates had a rough month in terms of offense.
With that said, there were a couple of players who stood out as having strong months, in fact, our May winner received a promotion due to his strong play. Ed Easley is The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Month of May. Easley finished the month hitting .340 with two home runs, two doubles, and seven runs batted in. For May, he slashed .340/.492/.500/.992 and led the organization with that .992 OPS.
Easley’s success led to a second call up to St. Louis on May 27th. Easley even remained on the MLB roster after Jon Jay was activated from the disabled list (as the club optioned pitcher Miguel Socolovich).
Easley had success in April as well. His 131 wRC+ is the highest in the Cardinals organization through the first two months of the season.
May Stat Leaders
OPS (min 30 AB)
Ed Easley, Mem - .992
Jeremy Hazelbaker, Sgf - .936
Anthony Garcia, Sgf - .927
Stephen Piscotty, Mem - .822
Nick Martini, Sgf - .808
Jeremy Hazelbaker‘s name appears a few times on the monthly leaderboard, even though he did not put in a full month of games for the Springfield Cardinals. The Cards organization signed Hazelbaker, who had been released by the Dodgers organization at the end of April, in mid-May and assigned him to Springfield. He has made the most of his time in the Cardinals organization, hitting .328/..379/.557/.936 over his first 16 games. The former Ball State University star has solidified the Springfield Cardinals lineup and outfield.
Another member of the Springfield Cardinals outfield, Anthony Garcia, put together a very strong month of May. Garcia, who hit just .128 in April, seems to be adjusting to the Double-A Texas League nicely. In May, he slashed .276/.396/.553/.948 for Springfield and tied for the organization lead with five home runs. On the season, Garcia, has walked more than he has struck out (24/18).
The Cardinal Nation’s May Starting Pitcher of the Month and Relief Pitcher of the Month will be named in the next couple of days, as well as a new monthly review looking at team results, hot/cold players, and key roster moves throughout the month of May.
