Cards Name Garcia, Perdomo Top Players in May

The St. Louis Cardinals selected Greg Garcia and Luis Perdomo the top minor league player and pitcher during May.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that infielder Greg Garcia has been named the organization’s May Player of the Month and right-handed pitcher Luis Perdomo has been named the May Pitcher of the Month.

Perdomo

Perdomo, a native of the Dominican Republic, is a starter at Peoria (A). In May, Perdomo made five starts and allowed only five earned runs (11 total), for a 1.42 ERA on the month. His team was shutout twice (both 2-0), and scored just one run in one of his starts, giving him 11 runs of support over the 5 games (2.2 runs/game).

Perdomo, who turned 22 on May 9, allowed 2 earned runs in his first two starts of the month (2-0 loss at Clinton and 3-1 loss at Cedar Rapids) before giving up just a single earned run over his last three starts and 20.0 innings pitched (0.45 ERA). The Chiefs lost 8-5 vs. Beloit on 5/17 (0ER, 6R) and lost 2-0 at Quad Cities (1ER) on 5/23 before giving Perdomo his first win of the month in a 5-0 shutout 5/29 vs. Kane County. In that 5/29 start, Perdomo went 8.0 innings and allowed only three hits, three walks and struck out nine. On the season, he has a 2-4 record, 1.48 ERA in eight starts with 52 K’s in 48.2 IP.

On Perdomo’s performance in May, LaRocque stated, “Luis capped off a very productive month of May, and was also named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week on May 31.”

Garcia

“Greg’s strong offensive performance and defensive play helped Memphis to a winning month in May,” stated the team’s Director of Player Development, Gary LaRocque. Memphis went 16-14 in May and won 10 of the last 13 games, including an eight-game win-streak.

Garcia, 25, is at Triple-A Memphis where he has appeared in 50 games for the Redbirds. He batted .361 (35-97) in May with four doubles and 12 RBI, collecting 11 multi-hit games. Garcia reached base in 23 of his 27 May games for a .421 on-base rate, and also amassed five steals during the month. His .361 average was 10th-best in the Pacific Coast League. The majority of Garcia’s starts in May came at shortstop (3 at second base, 27 at shortstop).
