GCL Cardinals 6 at GCL Mets 7

Like two children on a seesaw, each team was up and then down several times throughout this game. The Mets took the lead first, then the Cardinals came back and took it away. In half an inning, the Mets had it back. In another half inning, the Cardinals tied it and then half an inning later the Mets had the lead again. The Cardinals tied it again an inning and a half later. In the ninth the Cardinals took the lead, but couldn’t hold on. In the bottom of the ninth the Mets took the lead and the game.

For the Cardinals, pitching was the undoing, Starter Junior Fernandez was ineffective at keeping opposing runs off the board, giving up five runs, four earned, in three innings of work. Jake Woodford relieved Fernandez with no outs and two runners on in the fourth, and was able to stop the bleeding. Woodford pitched three scoreless innings, and handed a lead to Ismael Brito, who could not hold it. Brito gave up the winning runs in the ninth, and took the loss.

The Cardinals’ offense scored six runs on 12 hits. Dylan Tice drove in three of the six runs, on a two-run double, and a ninth inning single. Tice had the only RBI, as three runs scored on a double play and two errors. Tice also had the only extra base hit of the game. Carlos Talavera was 3-for-3 and scored a run. Bladimil Franco and Nick Plummer were each 2-for-4.

Wednesday’s game: vs. GCL Mets, TBA, 11:00 a.m. CDT

DSL Cardinals 5 at DSL Nationals 7

The Cardinals got behind early, but some key defensive errors by the Nationals in the fifth inning put the Cardinals ahead. The Cardinals’ pitching staff was unable to hold the lead, however.

Starter Juan Alvarez got behind in the first inning, but settled down for the next three frames. By the fifth, the Nationals had added a run, and in the sixth inning things fell apart for Alvarez. He pitched to three batters but was unable to record an out before being replaced with the bases loaded by Edwar Ramirez. Ramirez induced a double play, but a run scored. Unfortunately, Ramirez gave up another run to tie the game. Ramirez allowed two more runs in the seventh to put the Nationals in the lead. Ramirez was tagged with both a blown save and the loss. Noel De Jesus pitched a scoreless eighth.

The offense was unable to regain the lead after scoring four runs in the fifth. Carlos Rodriguez went 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Sanel Rosendo doubled in a run. Luis Flores, Elehuris Montero, and Dariel Gomez each doubled. Montero scored two runs.

Wednesday’s game: vs. DSL Nationals, TBA, 9:30 a.m. CDT
