Cardinals Activate Garcia, Option out Tui

The St. Louis Cardinals activated starter Jaime Garcia and sent down reliever Sam Tuivailala.

Cardinals Press Release

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have activated left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia (left groin strain) from the 15-day disabled list and that they had optioned right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala to Memphis (AAA) following last night’s game. Garcia is slated to start tonight’s game against Cincinnati.

Garcia, who missed 20 games since going on the disabled list July 4, is 3-3 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts this season – the last coming on June 24 at Miami.

Garcia, 29, worked 5.0 scoreless innings in an injury rehabilitation start for Peoria (A) last Thursday (July 23), teaming with two Chiefs relievers on a combined no-hitter. Garcia fanned six batters in that start, allowing just one base-runner (hit batsman), while throwing 58 pitches.

Tuivailala (0-1, 1.80 ERA) was unscored upon in his last eight appearances (8.0 IP) for the Cardinals, striking out seven.

Brian Walton’s take

These transactions were expected. Expect Memphis to announce a roster move to make room for Tuivailala, perhaps a pitcher moved down to Springfield.

Harris Optioned

In another move, the Cardinals optioned reliever Mitch Harris to Memphis on Monday. The right-hander had been injured while with St. Louis, but has been rehabbing with Memphis. This will require another roster move at Triple-A as MLB rehabbers do not count against the 25-man limit on the teams with which they are rehabbing.

Tuesday Update: Donofrio Demoted

To make room for Tuivailala on the Memphis Redbirds’ 25-man roster, right-hander Joey Donofrio has been transferred to Double-A Springfield. In his second Triple-A stint, Donofrio allowed eight runs, six earned, in 12 1/3 innings (4.38 ERA). He struck out five and walked five. Donofrio also appeared in 10 games with Memphis in 2014.

Tuesday Update: Cooney Crashed

The Memphis Redbirds placed pitcher Tim Cooney on the seven-day disabled list due to appendicitis. The transaction was retroactive to the left-hander’s optioning to Triple-A on Monday.

Tuesday Update: Walden Closer

After throwing a pair of scoreless innings with Double-A Springfield, Cardinals reliever Jordan Walden will continue his rehab assignment with the Redbirds. The 27-year-old right-hander, sidelined since April 30 with right biceps inflammation, is currently on St. Louis’ 60-day disabled list.
