The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have placed outfielder Matt Holliday (right quadriceps strain) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Greg Garcia from Memphis (AAA). The team also announced that it has designated first baseman Dan Johnson for assignment in order to add newly-acquired outfielder/first baseman Brandon Moss to both the 25-man and 40-man rosters.
Garcia will be making his 2nd appearance of the season with the Cardinals, having appeared in 12 games from June 19 to July 3, batting .417 (5-for-12) with a game-tying pinch-homer on June 26 vs. the Chicago Cubs.
The left-handed hitting Garcia was batting .299 (84-for-281) with 33 RBI and a .404 on-base pct. in his 81 games at Memphis this season. Garcia, 25, was batting .332 (65-for-196) vs, right-handed pitchers and .354 (23-for-65) with 32 RBI when batting with runners in scoring position.
Holliday is going on the disabled list for the 2nd time this season. The All-Star outfielder missed 31 games from June 9 to July 16 with a right quadriceps strain, with the Cardinals going 18-13 during his absence.
Holliday's injury is a grade two strain (tear). The organization is hopeful he can return before the conclusion of the regular season.
