Cardinals System News: Friday, August 7

Friday’s news and notes across the St. Louis Cardinals system – moves, injuries and more!

Thomas is Back to Triple-A

Right-handed pitcher Chris Thomas has again been promoted from Double-A Springfield to Memphis. Last month, the 27-year-old appeared in two games for the Redbirds, posting a 1-0 record with a 1.50 ERA (one earned run in six innings) on two hits, five strikeouts and no walks.

With Springfield, Thomas has a 3.40 ERA in 37 games. Over 55 2/3 Double-A innings, he logged 51 strikeouts and 11 walks.

Thomas essentially takes the Memphis roster spot of pitcher Tyler Lyons, promoted to St. Louis earlier Friday.

Williams Mission Accomplished

With the arrival of Greg Garcia down from St. Louis, Memphis utilityman Matt Williams was transferred back to Springfield. Williams had just been moved up on July 30th.

In six games this time up in Triple-A, the 25-year-old went 6-for-18 (.333) and also drew five walks. He takes Thomas’ spot on Springfield’s 25-man roster.

McCarvel’s Motive

Thursday’s move of catcher Ryan McCarvel down to the Gulf Coast League from Johnson City looked like a head-scratcher initially, as the 19th rounder has been hitting well in the Appalachian League.

The Cardinal Nation’s GCL Cards reporter Paul Ivice reports the reason for the move - two of the GCL catchers are currently banged up. Stephen Zavala has a sprained finger and Frankie Rodriguez is being slowed by a bruised knee.

As I have noted before, the 35-man roster limit in short-season clubs means many short-term injuries are not reported. Hence the value of TCN’s on-site reporters in getting exclusive news like this to you.

Bandes Bashed

First base is a place known for many bang-bang plays. So it was on Friday for Gulf Coast League first sacker Luis Bandes. He suffered an injured left arm in a collision with a runner while receiving a throw from pitcher Estarlin Arias on a slow roller back to the mound.

Ivice noted the injury appeared serious as Bandes was being treated on site by paramedics before he was sent to the hospital. Dylan Becker replaced him in the game. More news when we get it.

Update: Bandes suffered a dislocated elbow and will miss the remainder of the season.
