Cardinals System News: Friday, August 14

Friday’s news and notes across the St. Louis Cardinals system – promotions and more promotions.

2 Zags Zooming

Right-handed pitcher Arturo Reyes has been promoted from Double-A Springfield to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. In 17 starts this season for Springfield, the 23-year-old went 7-7 with a 2.64 ERA (29 earned runs in 99 innings).

Reyes attended Gonzaga University where he was a teammate of fellow Bulldog and now fellow Redbirds pitcher Marco Gonzales. Both were selected by the Cardinals in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, in which Gonzales was drafted in the first round and Reyes last, in the 40th.

The Redbirds had been playing with a 24-man active roster for the last week so no other moves were necessary.

Rowland Rising Repeat

Due to Reyes’ promotion, Springfield needed another pitcher. Right-handed reliever Robby Rowland received the call from A-Advanced Palm Beach. It was the 23-year-old’s second promotion in 2015, having started the Cardinals segment of his career with Peoria, where he was named a Midwest League mid-season All-Star.

This will be Rowland’s Double-A debut, though he first reached high-A in 2013 as a starter in the Pirates organization. With Palm Beach, he allowed five earned runs in 10 innings for a 4.50 ERA and converted five saves in six opportunities. Rowland fanned six Florida State League batters and walked four, two intentional.

Polanco Promoted

After first reaching Class-A Peoria in 2013, right-handed reliever Jhonny Polanco has finally moved up to A-Advanced Palm Beach. The 23-year-old Nicaraguan first signed with St. Louis in 2009.

With the Chiefs this season, Polanco allowed 23 earned runs in 58 innings for a 3.57 ERA. He struck out 69 but issued 30 free passes in his 30 appearances and saved one of two chances.

Then Again

Selected to backfill Polanco in the Peoria pen is State College right-hander Jery Then. The 20-year-old has been with St. Louis just one year after signing as a non-drafted free agent.

With State College, Then had a 4.68 ERA, having yielded 13 earned runs in 25 innings. The Dominican Republic native struck out 19, but walked 12.
