There were several player moves in the St. Louis Cardinals system on Friday. As you might expect, they were in response to other needs higher in the system.
Thomas Back to Triple-A
With Memphis closer Sam Tuivailala joining St. Louis for the weekend to backfill for Trevor Rosenthal, the Triple-A Redbirds would have been one pitcher short. The organization remedied that by bring back right-handed reliever Chris Thomas from Double-A Springfield.
The 27-year-old knows the way, having ridden the shuttle multiple times this season. In fact, Thomas just left Memphis last Sunday, August 23 when Tyler Lyons was optioned from St. Louis and threw one scoreless frame back in the Texas League.
Between the two stops, Thomas has a 2.97 ERA in 69 2/3 innings over 46 games. He has struck out 62 and issued just 15 walks.
Sohn Advancing Again
As noted in Thursday’s edition, Palm Beach has received infielder Allen Staton from Johnson City. Who he was replacing on the Florida State League Cardinals became clear on Friday when Andrew Sohn was promoted to Springfield. On the Double-A Cards, the infielder backfills Thomas’ spot.
Sohn had just rejoined Palm Beach from Peoria eight days ago. With the exception of that time, consisting of a 2-for-4 outing on Monday and eight July Florida State League contests, Sohn had spent all of 2015 with the Chiefs. Overall this season, his line is .241/.308/.320/.628 in 291 at-bats over 88 games.
