Cards’ Rosenthal Returns from Paternity Leave

St. Louis’ closer Trevor Rosenthal returns from paternity leave and Sam Tuivailala heads back to Memphis.

St. Louis Cardinals press release

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have recalled pitcher Trevor Rosenthal from the paternity leave list prior to tonight’s series opener against Washington and that pitcher Sam Tuivailala was optioned to Memphis (AAA) following yesterday’s game.

Brian Walton’s take

In some corners of the fan base, short-sighted people took exception to Rosenthal being at his wife’s side for the birth of their second daughter. I feel sorry for them and their lack of perspective. There was no damage as the Cardinals won two of three in San Francisco without Rosenthal and get a fresher arm for the final month.

Tuivailala made one appearance this past weekend, pitching the ninth inning in St. Louis’ 6-0 win on Saturday. It was a typical outing for him. On one hand, impressive upper 90’s heat and three strikeouts, but also some wildness that led to a walk as well as a base hit – all in one inning.

Without an injury in St. Louis in the interim, Tuivailala is required to remain with Memphis through the end of the regular season – Labor Day. He will undoubtedly be back then. Though the Redbirds are not yet officially eliminated from the post-season, it is almost certain with their current elimination number at two.
