Cardinals System News: Wednesday, September 2

Wednesday’s news and notes across the St. Louis Cardinals system – promotions and more!

Five Springfield Moves

Make sure you check out Derek Shore’s Springfield Cardinals Notebook for Week 21, as it has information on five player moves over the last two days that affect the Double-A club – infielder Brett Wiley plus pitchers Kurt Heyer and Ryan Sherriff heading up to Memphis with pitchers Tyler Melling and Jhonny Polanco coming in from Palm Beach.

Alexander Back to the Beach

Kevin Alexander has pitched at three levels this season, with his latest move a return to Palm Beach from State College. This is to help cover for the losses of Melling and Polanco from the first-place Beach Birds’ bullpen.

The right-hander started the season in extended spring training. He spent a week on Palm Beach’s roster in April, but did not pitch. Alexander officially started his 2015 season thereafter with Single-A Peoria, recording a 3.72 ERA in 12 Midwest League appearances. He arrived at State College on July 24, posting a 2-1 record with two saves in four opportunities and a 3.66 ERA.

Chinea Offers Bat to State College

With Johnson City’s season over, the Cardinals have promoted Chris Chinea to short-season Class-A State College. The catcher hit .301 with six home runs and 27 RBI in his rookie campaign in the Appalachian League. Chinea was St. Louis’ 17th-round draft pick this June.

Update: Hawkins Heading South

The Cardinals promoted pitcher Chandler Hawkins from Johnson City to fill the other pitching opening at Palm Beach. St. Louis' 33rd rounder in this June's draft from Arkansas State threw 29 1/3 innings over 16 Appy League games. The 22-year-old struck out 32 and walked 11 and logged a 1.84 ERA.
