Diaz, Gomber Tops in August

The Cardinals have named Memphis shortstop Aledmys Diaz and Peoria pitcher Austin Gomber Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for August.

Diaz’ Improvement

The 25-year-old began the month with Double-A Springfield, posting a line of .373/.432/.701/1.133 in 67 at-bats over 18 games. Diaz finished the month with seven games with Triple-A Memphis. At Triple-A, his line was .320/.414/.480/.894 in 25 Pacific Coast League at-bats. Between the two stops, he totaled six home runs and 19 RBI.

Gomber is Great

In August, the 21-year-old threw 25 2/3 innings over four starts, yielding just two runs, one earned, for a 0.35 ERA. Gomber struck out 32 and walked just seven while holding MWL hitters to a collective .156 average and winning all four games.

Turgeon Away

The Palm Beach Cardinals placed infielder Casey Turgeon on the temporarily inactive list. The 22-year-old has been struggling recently, with a .184 average over the last 10 games. For the season, Turgeon is batting .217 with one home run and 22 RBI in 82 Florida State League game.

Aikin to Help Palm Beach

The Cardinals promoted outfielder Craig Aikin from State College to Palm Beach. There, he takes Turgeon’s roster spot. In one game at Johnson City and 52 with the Spikes, Aikin had a line of .244/.341/.282/.623. The former University of Oklahoma player was St. Louis’ 13th-round selection in this June’s draft.

Update: Lomascolo Launched Upward

The Cardinals promoted reliever Nick Lomascolo from Peoria to Palm Beach on Saturday. The 24-year-old had been with the Chiefs all season, logging a 2.38 ERA in 39 games. Over 64 1/3 innings, the left-hander fanned 74, but also walked 35 and hit 10 batters.

Update: Llorens Back

Peoria activated reliever Dixon Llorens off the seven-day disabled list on Saturday. The right-hander went on the DL on August 26th with forearm tendinitis.

In 18 2/3 innings with the Chiefs, the sidearmer has a 7.23 ERA. Llorens struck out 22 and walked nine. He has a 0-1 record with two saves in two opportunities. Llorens first reached Peoria to open 2013 before working his way up to Springfield briefly last season.

Update: Wiley Returned

On Friday, the Cardinals returned infielder Brett Wiley to Springfield from Memphis. In his only Triple-A game to date, the 23-year-old had one single and one strikeout in three at-bats.

Update: Schumacher Moving

On Saturday, the Cardinals promoted reliever Cody Schumacher from Palm Beach to Springfield. The 24-year-old from Missouri State had appeared in 21 Florida State League games in addition to 14 at Peoria. With Palm Beach, the right-hander posted a 3.95 ERA to go with 32 strikeouts and nine walks in 43 1/3 innings.
