Spikes’ Dennard Named NYPL Player of the Week

Armstrong State product, 1B R.J. Dennard, earns weekly honors after hot ending to 2015 season.

Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Tuesday that State College Spikes first baseman and designated hitter R.J. Dennard has been named the New York-Penn League’s Player of the Week for the week of August 31-September 7, 2015.

Dennard becomes the second Spike to earn one of the NYPL’s weekly awards this season. Right-hander Juan Perez won the NYPL Pitcher of the Week award for the week of July 13-19 earlier in the summer.

The Armstrong State product took the honors after smashing the first two homers of his professional career in the same game on September 2 at Mahoning Valley. Dennard also produced at least one hit in his last seven games, with four straight multi-hit games to close out the year.

Over a six-game span this week, the Cardinals’ 2015 39th-round draft choice hit .478 (11-for-23) with three doubles, five runs batted in and 5 five runs scored. Dennard also improved his batting average from .190 on August 30 to .250 by season’s end.
