Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 10/26/15

Luke Weaver had another strong relief outing as Surprise won in Monday Arizona Fall League action.

Results from Arizona Fall League game played Monday, October 26th.

Surprise 6 at Peoria 1

Tallies in five of the last six frames lifted the Saguaros (8-3) over the Javelinas, 6-1.

Luke Weaver (W, 1-0) was impressive in his third relief appearance of the fall campaign, facing the minimum over 2 1/3 frames. The righty replaced Milwaukee right-hander Adrian Houser in the fourth with a run already across and a runner on third with two outs. Weaver caught Peoria’s nine hole batter looking at strike three, one of his four strikeouts on the day, keeping the score tied at one all.

After Surprise reclaimed the lead with two in the visitors half of the fifth, the Florida native retired the top of the Javelinas’ order on a swinging K, line out to right and 6-3 ground out. The Saguaros added a single tally the next inning, giving Weaver a 4-1 cushion when he came to the mound in the bottom of the frame. Peoria’s clean-up hitter struck out swinging but Weaver plunked speedster Phillip Ervin (CIN), the only batter to reach against him. The 22-year-old erased Ervin on a pick off before garnering a called strike three to end his stint.

Patrick Wisdom was the sole Cardinals’ representative in the batting order. The third baseman went hitless in four at bats. Wisdom popped into a 3-4 force in the second, flew out to center to open the fifth, finishing with two called strikeouts.

Tuesday’s game: vs. Peoria (4-5), 12:35 pm MST, TBA
