Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 10/28/15

Alex Reyes started well, but Dean Kiekhefer and the Surprise bullpen allowed 11 runs in their Wednesday loss.

Results from Arizona Fall League game played Wednesday, October 28th.

Mesa 11 at Surprise 10

An implosion by the Saguaros’ bullpen resulted in an 11-10 loss to the Solar Sox on Wednesday.

Dean Kiekhefer, the last of four Surprise relievers, was unable to stem Mesa’s offensive onslaught, taking his first loss against one win. The lefty entered the eighth with three runs already across and his team clinging to an 8-6 lead. He could not get the final out of the frame before giving up a two-run double that scored both inherited runners. Kiekhefer served up a three-run bomb in the ninth that proved to be the difference in the game.

Kiekhefer’s first blown save of the fall campaign was Surprise’s second blown lead of the contest, the bullpen allowing all 11 tallies and negating Alex Reyes’ scoreless start. Reyes held down Mesa through four but required 80 pitches to do so, yielding four hits and three bases-on-balls while fanning three.

The offense compiled 11 hits and nine walks but Charlie Tilson, St. Louis’ sole starter, did little to aid the cause. The left fielder was hitless in four at bats, working one free pass and driving in one.

Thursday’s game: Surprise (9-4) at Mesa (3-10), 12:35 pm MST, Sam Wolff (1-0, 5.40)
