Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 11/5/15

Dean Kiekhefer was sharp with five strikeouts in two innings of Surprise’s Thursday win.

Results from Arizona Fall League game played Thursday, November 5th.

Surprise 1 at Glendale 0

A quartet of Saguaros’ hurlers combined for a 1-0 shutout of the Desert Dogs, pushing the former’s winning streak to three and the latter’s losing streak to five.

The quartet, which permitted five hits in total, was led by Milwaukee right-hander Adrian Houser (W, 2-1) who limited Glendale (8-10) to three hits and a walk through five. Houser, who did not fan a batter, induced eight ground- and four fly- ball outs.

Dean Kiekhefer, however, was a strikeout machine, notching five strikeouts in two innings. The southpaw took the mound just after Surprise (12-7) scored the only tally in the visitor half of the sixth and immediately gave up a double to the Desert Dogs’ lead-off hitter. Kiekhefer worked two swinging K’s while his battery mate, Michael Ohlman, nailed the runner trying to steal third. Three more swinging strikeouts ensued in the one-two-three seventh.

The Brewers’ Jacob Barnes and Damien Magnifico each tossed a scoreless frame, Magnifico earning his second save. Pirates’ lefty Cody Dickson took the loss in his only inning of work.

Limited to just six hits themselves, the Saguaros broke through in the sixth when Dustin Fowler (NYY) doubled to start the sixth. A two-out single by fellow Yankees’ farmhand Tyler Austin drove him in.

Surprise had a chance to pad its slim lead the next frame but was thwarted. A one-out double put a runner in scoring position with Ohlman at the plate but the bases were cleared after the runner was caught stealing. Ohlman lined a double to center, his only hit in three at bats.

Aledmys Diaz was hitless in four at bats, giving him just two hits in his last 18 at bats. The shortstop and number two batter whiffed twice, once when he was caught looking with Fowler at second in the sixth.

Wednesday’s star Patrick Wisdom also went 0-for-4 out of the five hole. The third baseman fanned three times, twice looking.
