Surprise 7 at Peoria 4

The West Division champion Surprise Saguaros (19-11-1) finished their Arizona Fall League regular season with a 7-4 comeback win at Peoria (12-15-1) on Thursday afternoon. Down 4-1 after four, Surprise re-tied the game in the sixth and pulled away with another three-spot in the eighth.

All four St. Louis Cardinals position players started for the second consecutive day: shortstop Aledmys Diaz batting second, third baseman Patrick Wisdom hitting fifth, catcher Michael Ohlman sixth and left fielder Charlie Tilson in the seventh spot.

Surprise starter Chaz Hebert (NYY) yielded three runs in the first and did not escape the second before the relief corps was called upon. The only run allowed by the Saguaros bullpen in the final 7 1/3 frames was unearned.

The Saguaros got on the board with a single tally in the third on singles by Dustin Fowler (NYY), Diaz and Jurickson Profar (TEX). Diaz also stole a base but was stranded.

Peoria got the run back in the fourth after a double and a run-scoring fielding error by Diaz.

Surprise brought out the lumber in the sixth with three consecutive extra-base hits that tied the game at four-all. Tyler Austin (NYY) doubled and came home on Wisdom’s home run to left. Ohlman went back-to-back with his solo shot to left-center.

The eighth inning was the difference-maker as the Cardinals were again a big part of the run production. Diaz led off with a double, moved up on a wild pitch and came home on an error. Later in the inning, Tilson capped off the day’s scoring with a two-run single to center.

Given a three-run lead, Robby Rowland protected it, collecting the final six outs in order, including two strikeouts. It was his third save of the AFL campaign as he lowered his ERA to 4.76.

On the day, Diaz (.305) singled and doubled in five at-bats, scoring one, stealing a base and committing his fifth error. Wisdom’s (.237) two-run homer was his only hit in five at-bats. Ohlman’s (.205) 1-for-4 day included his solo shot and a pair of strikeouts. Tilson’s (.203) two-run single was his lone safety in a 1-for-4 afternoon.

Saturday’s game: AFL title game, Surprise vs. East Division champion Scottsdale (18-12), 3:05 p.m. MST, MLB Network, starting pitchers TBA.
