St. Louis Cardinals prospects results in the Venezuelan and Puerto Rican winter leagues

This weekly notebook covers St. Louis Cardinals prospects playing in winter leagues in Venezuela and Puerto Rico. Anthony Garcia is cold in Puerto Rico.

Stats are through January 26th.

 Venezuelan League

The Venezuelan League consists of eight teams competing in one group.  Opening Day was October 7th and the regular season ended on December 29th.  Bravos de Margarita was among the six teams that advanced to the postseason which began on January 2nd but compiled a 3-4 mark and was eliminated prior to the semi-finals.

Bravos de Margarita –

Breyvic Valera:  Valera went 11-for-33 with three base-on-balls, touched home seven times and knocked in two, a line of .333/.378/.333/.712.  He fanned three times and committed one error.  Defensively, Valera spent most of his time in left with two games at second and one in center.

Justin Wright:  Wright was not successful in his only appearance in a 3-2 loss on the 10th.  The southpaw entered a tie game in the seventh with runners at first and single and gave up a single to jam the sacks full with one out.  A pinch hitter got Wright the hook and his successor allowed the tie-breaking run to score.

 Puerto Rican League

The four-team Puerto Rican League’s regular season ran from October 30th through December 30th with the top three teams advancing to a 12-game Round-Robin tournament.  Gigantes de Carolina, for whom Anthony Garcia, Pedro Echemendia and Jonathan Rodriguez played, did not advance, making the three available for the post-season dispersal draft.  Garcia was the only St. Louis prospect selected, chosen by Mayaguez, the regular-season champion, with their first pick.

Indios de Mayaguez -

Anthony Garcia : The hot-and-cold outfielder has been ice cold lately. Garcia played in seven games, five starts, during the Round-Robin tournament, garnering just three hits in 24 at bats.  Only one of his three hits went for extras, a double that drove in his only run.  Garcia scored once and struck out five times but Mayaguez advanced to the league championship series despite his offensive woes.

The 2016 Puerto Rican League championship pits the same two squads against each other as did the 2015 series – Santurce versus Mayaguez.  The best-of-seven series is knotted at two all with Mayaguez trying to topple the reigning league champions.  Garcia is hitless in five at bats over three games, one start.
