The St. Louis Cardinals have sent 40-man roster pitcher Marco Gonzales to minor league camp

The St. Louis Cardinals have sent 40-man roster pitcher Marco Gonzales to minor league camp.

St. Louis Cardinals press release

The St. Louis Cardinals announced following today’s game that left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales has been optioned to Memphis (AAA), reducing the number of players in camp to 40, including six non-roster invitees.

The Cardinals spring roster currently has 20 pitchers (1 non-roster); 4 catchers (1 non-roster); 10 infielders (2 non-roster) and 6 outfielders (2 non-roster).

Brian Walton’s take

The move was expected with the only question its timing. My guess is that Gonzales would have been sent to minors camp with the Sunday cuts, but he was called upon to start for St .Louis in Jaime Garcia’s place against Boston on Monday. This way, Gonzales can settle into a regular starting schedule in minor league camp to prepare for his expected berth in the Triple-A Memphis rotation. Tim Cooney is the last projected member of Memphis' rotation still with St. Louis.

Against the Red Sox, Gonzales did not have his best day, yielding two runs in two innings on two hits and three walks. He took his second loss of the spring as his ERA rose to 4.66.
