Cardinals Minors Working Rosters: 03/27/16

How St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers are organized late in 2016 spring training camp.

As I noted in the previous version of the working groups in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league camp, these rosters are constantly in flux. Players are moved to where they are needed and can get their work in best.

Having said that, there is a natural pressure of movement to the right. What I mean is that as players are cut from St. Louis, the usually land on the Memphis roster. That pushes others to Springfield and etc. down the line.

Further, these working groups are too large for the regular season active roster limits of 25. In every case, more than 30 players are still among those competing at each level. That will lead to more movement of some players downward.

Perhaps the key break is between Peoria 1 and Peoria 2 because in reality, Peoria 2 by another name is State College or extended spring training. So those who make Peoria 1 will travel north with Chiefs manager Joe Kruzel and his staff, while the Peoria 2 players will remain behind in Florida to keep working in extended spring training.

Against that backdrop, here is an update on the working groups. By my quick count, 39 players have moved to the right since earlier this week, including the Peoria 2 group growing from 24 to 32.

This is business as usual. Yet some of the moves are worth calling out.

For example, our number two prospect in the system, Jack Flaherty, was shifted from Springfield to Palm Beach. Not surprisingly, hard-throwers Junior Fernandez and Sandy Alcantara moved from Palm Beach to Peoria 1. Short-season pitching standouts Bryan Dobzanski, David Oca and Ronnie Williams went from Peoria 1 to Peoria 2.

Among the infielders, Leobaldo Pina and Darren Seferina shifted from Springfield to Palm Beach and Allen Cordoba went down to Peoria 1 from Palm Beach.

The lists below include 174 players, including 10 who are not currently active, and covers the first five major league cuts of the spring.

Since last time, one came down from MLB camp in Marco Gonzales. Four returned from the World Baseball Classic qualifiers in Dewin Perez, Jonathan Escudero, Edmundo Sosa and Alex Mejia. Three players came off the rehab list in Jeff Frey, Juan Perez and Tyler Waldron but three more went on in Hunter Newman, Nick Plummer and Luke Weaver. Finally, two pitchers were given their release in Lee Stoppelman and Kevin Alexander.
