Derrick May on Cards Spring Minors Standouts

As the St. Louis Cardinals minor league camp was nearing its conclusion, minor league hitting coordinator Derrick May sat down to discuss some of his charges who stood out this spring.

During this 13-minute conversation, May touched on improvements from some of the expected names - including Magneuris Sierra, Harrison Bader, Paul DeJong, C.J. McElroy, Charlie Tilson, Oscar Mercado and Darren Seferina. The first names he mentioned, however, were a couple of mild surprises in Steve Bean and R.J. Dennard.

Later, he highlighted on two veterans who are now major leaguers in Jeremy Hazelbaker and Tommy Pham.

In between, a number of more general topics were discussed - how the spring routine helps development, how team assignments are considered – including jumps over levels, hitters dealing with higher level pitching and handling adversity.

Since this interview, May received a much-deserved promotion to the assistant hitting coach for the major league club. His replacement as the leader of the minor league hitting coaches is George Greer, previously the organization’s offensive strategist.
