St. Louis Cardinals press release

The St. Louis Cardinals traded left-handed pitcher Jayson Aquino to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations this morning.

Aquino was acquired by the Cardinals on a waiver claim from the Cleveland Indians on Dec. 9, 2015, and assigned to the Cardinals 40-man roster, before being designated for assignment and traded to the Orioles.  He did not make an appearance in any of the Cardinals Major League Spring Training games.

The Orioles become Aquino’s sixth organization since being signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic by the Colorado Rockies in 2009.

Brian Walton’s take

In a way, this is a reverse of the transaction last February in which the Cardinals acquired 40-man catcher Michael Ohlman from the Orioles for cash considerations.

Baltimore is not only Aquino’s sixth organization since 2009, it is his sixth in the last 18 months alone! So the fact that the Cardinals gave up on the right-hander – at least in his value to hold onto a 40-man roster spot – is not particularly surprising.

Had there been no interest in Aquino elsewhere in MLB and he remained with the Cardinals, he would have been assigned to the Double-A Springfield bullpen to open the season. Aquino has been a starter his entire career, never pitching above high-A.  Baltimore has assigned him to Double-A Bowie.

Despite what the team press release above says, Aquino did pitch in St. Louis’ Major League camp this spring – or at least someone wearing his uniform. He allowed two runs in three innings over three appearances before being among the first cuts.

The Cardinals designated Aquino for assignment when Eric Fryer and Jeremy Hazelbaker were added to the 40-man and 25-man active rosters on Sunday.
