Two St. Louis Cardinals prospects have been selected to participate in the 18th annual Major League Baseball All-Star Futures Game, to be held on Sunday, July 10, in San Diego. One is a repeater, Memphis Redbirds pitcher Alex Reyes, who was invited in 2015, but was unable to participate due to injury. The other is Springfield catcher Carson Kelly. The two will be opponents, with Reyes on the World Team and Kelly representing the USA.
Kelly was the 2015 Gold Glove Award winner at his position for all of the minor leagues. After his promotion to Double-A for 2016, the 21-year-old has shown offensive improvement as well with a line of .291/.333/.418/.752 over 58 Texas League contests.
Kelly shared his excitement with The Cardinal Nation’s Derek Shore prior to Tuesday night's Texas League All-Star Game in Springfield.
"It's awesome,” Kelly said. “It's definitely an honor to go out there and represent the Cardinals, especially to be with Alex Reyes; an awesome guy. It's going to be a lot of fun (in San Diego)."
Reyes, also 21 years of age, had a late start to his 2016 season after completing a drug suspension. In his seven starts since his May activation at Triple-A Memphis, the right-hander has a 4.35 ERA to go with 48 strikeouts and 17 walks in just 31 innings.
Reached on Wednesday, Reyes shared his reaction with me.
"It's amazing," Reyes said. "You know last year I really wanted to be a part of that game, but the time wasn't right. Being able to go this year and represent the organization is an honor. The only downfall is that I won't have Carson catching me, but other than that, it should be a great experience."
Reyes, born in New Jersey, and signed out of the Dominican Republic, is The Cardinal Nation’s top-ranked St. Louis prospect and ninth in the Scout.com national prospect rankings. Kelly is the organization’s top-ranked catcher and is 12th on TCN’s most recent Cardinals monthly rankings. He joined St. Louis after being selected the second round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft as a third baseman from an Oregon high school.
