St. Louis Cardinals minor league infielder Luke Doyle has been slapped with a second suspension after refusing to take a drug test.

Major League Baseball Press Release

St. Louis Cardinals Minor League second baseman Luke Doyle has received a 100-game suspension without pay following his refusal to take a drug test. The suspension of Doyle, who is currently on the roster of the rookie-level Johnson City Cardinals of the Appalachian League, is effective immediately upon the completion of his current suspension.

Brian Walton’s take

This sequence of events seems suggests to me that Doyle’s brief Cardinals career was destined to end, either way. The 21-year-old is the first Cardinal to receive a 100-game suspension.

Since signing on June 15, 2015, St. Louis’ 20th-round draft pick that year has spent almost as many games on the restricted list as on the field with 112 more on the pines ahead.

The left-handed hitter from Yavapai College in Arizona played every infield position and both corner outfield spots over his first 44 games as a professional. The 6-foot, 185-pounder posted a line of .207/.345/.354/.699 at Johnson City last season.

Doyle was suspended on March 4, 2016 after testing positive for Amphetamine, labeled a stimulant. His 50 game suspension began with the Appalachian League season opener in mid-June and he has served 38 games of his original penalty to date.

Given the Appy League’s 68-game schedule, with the 100 games tacked on, Doyle is now required to sit out until 14 games into the 2018 season. More than likely, his affiliated baseball career is over, instead.
