Triple-A third baseman Patrick Wisdom began his rehab in the Gulf Coast League on Saturday – and other Cardinals system news.

Wisdom Rehabbing in GCL

Memphis Redbirds third baseman Patrick Wisdom, out since June 17, has begun a rehab assignment with the Gulf Coast League Cardinals. His first outing was perfect as he singled, drew two walks, stole a base and drove in a run for a 2.000 OPS.

The 24-year-old had struggled to a line of .234/.317/.359/.676 in 192 at-bats over his first 56 Triple-A games. Wisdom has three home runs and 21 RBI this season.

 

All-purpose Alvarez Ok

The Peoria Chiefs activated Midwest League All-Star second baseman Eliezer Alvarez from the seven-day disabled list on Saturday.

On July 22, when hit by a pitch in the back of the head, suffering a conclusion, the 21-year-old led the Chiefs in most offensive categories. They include runs (51), hits (108, tied), doubles (26), triples (5), RBI (48), batting average (.321), OBP (.403), slugging (.464) and OPS (.867).

 

Next Step in Wacha Plan for Jones

Manager Johnny Rodriguez told TCN reporter Kara Duriez in her Week 16 State College Spikes Notebook that he was hoping for a second starter to be added to his club along with Jordan Hicks to replace promoted Ronnie Williams and John Kilichowski.

Rodriguez’ request was answered on Saturday with the assignment of right-handed pitcher Connor Jones from the rookie-level GCL Cardinals. The Cardinals' 2016 second-round draft choice from the University of Virginia made four single-inning appearances in the GCL from July 20 to August 2. The Hartford, CT native posted a 2.25 ERA, allowed three hits, a walk and struck out four.

 

Franco Falls

Outfielder Bladimil Franco was returned to State College from Single-A Peoria. In the Midwest League, the 22-year-old struggled, with a line of .218/.253/.241/.494 in 87 at-bats over 25 contests.

Earlier this season, Franco, a 2015 Gulf Coast League All-Star, played in eight games in State College. The San Cristobal, Dominican Republic native has a .258 batting average with three doubles and five runs batted in for the Spikes.
