The St. Louis Cardinals had another busy day of transactions on Friday, led by the return of third baseman Patrick Wisdom to Memphis

The St. Louis Cardinals had another busy day of transactions on Friday, led by the return of third baseman Patrick Wisdom to Memphis’ lineup.

Wisdom activated after two months

Patrick Wisdom was activated at Triple-A Memphis and returned to action on Friday night for the first time since June 17th. Wisdom appeared in two rehab games for the GCL Cardinals, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.

With Memphis, the third baseman holds .234/.317/.359 slash line with three long balls and 21 RBI through 56 games in his first season in the Pacific Coast League.

Morales to rehab assignment

As expected, Springfield starting pitcher Andrew Morales was sent on a rehab assignment and made his debut for the GCL Cardinals on Friday. Morales dominated over two scoreless innings, striking out five. The right-hander has missed parts of the last two months with shoulder issues.

The organization's Pitcher of the Month in April aggravated his shoulder in his second start off the DL on July 1st, a game in which he was pulled after just three innings. When healthy, the former UC Irvine product has been successful in his second go-around through the Texas League, compiling 3.35 ERA in 14 starts for the S-Cards. He has fanned 66 batters against 18 walks (78 innings).

Caldwell out again

On August 5th, Springfield gained Bruce Caldwell back after a ten-day DL stint. A week later, Caldwell returns to the disabled list with an injury. I was told it was not the oblique, but reportedly an inflammation type injury on his face.

Since being activated most recently, the second baseman was 3-for-12 with a homer and 5 RBI in three games. On the season, the Texas League mid-season all-star has .246/.320/.383 slash line with nine homers and 44 RBI through 90 games (321 at-bats).

Big jump for JC’s Hawkins

In what will be a temporary stint, former Missouri State Bear Joey Hawkins returns to Springfield as a Springbird and will fill in for Caldwell in his absence. Hawkins was immediately inserted into the Texas League Cardinals lineup on Friday night, as he batted ninth and was 0-for-3 in his debut.

Overall, the shortstop has posted .105/.148/.175 slash line with a homer and 5 RBI in 18 games between High-A Palm Beach and Rookie-Ball Johnson City.

Newman back to JC

With Hawkins gone, Johnson City received first baseman Hunter Newman from the Gulf Coast League Cardinals. Newman, who hit .259 with the Appy League Cardinals last year, doubled in five at-bats in his debut outside of the complex leagues on Friday night.

The 22-year old batted .301 with two homers and 11 RBI in 20 games (73 at-bats) on the Jupiter backfields this season.

FA Fernandez added

The Cardinals signed minor league second baseman Jose Fernandez and assigned him to High-A Palm Beach. Fernandez, who has been released by the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros this season, will help supplement an injury-riddled club up-the-middle.

The 23-year old carries a .176/.337/.265 slash line with no homers and 4 RBI in 23 games between the Braves and Astros High-A affiliates in 2016. The Dominican, who was originally signed by the Astros prior to the 2010 season, has a .229/.315/.334 slash line in 295-lifetime games (1019 career at-bats) through six seasons as a professional.
