On Friday, catchers were the focus of transactions across the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system. The attention shifted to infielders on Saturday.
On Saturday, Memphis Redbirds infielder Dean Anna was activated off the seven-day disabled list. The 40-man roster player was out from August 9-20.
The 29-year-old has played in 100 games with Memphis in 2016, with a line of .268/.350/.348/.699.
With the return of Anna, infielder Alex Mejia was returned to Double-A Springfield from Memphis. The 25-year-old had been in Triple-A since May 28 but missed most of June and July due to a broken wrist. Mejia had opened the season with Memphis, but was sent down on April 19.
Overall, in 197 at-bats over 61 games between the two levels this season, the right-handed hitter has a slash line of .249/.299/.345/.644. Mejia has one home run and 20 RBI.
Mejis first reached Springfield in July 2014 and spent 59 games with Memphis in 2015.
Infielder Joey Hawkins was returned to short-season ball from Springfield, with his temporary Double-A assignment that began on August 12 ended by the arrival of Mejia. However, the 23-year old received a promotion in the process, being re-assigned to State College after opening the season with Johnson City.
Hawkins was over his head at Springfield, with just one single and nine strikeouts in 20 at-bats (.050). Overall, the shortstop has posted a .091/.155/.143/.298 slash line with a home run and six RBI in 25 games with Springfield, Johnson City and high-A Palm Beach, where he also briefly filled in for two contests.
