Highlights of Sunday’s games across the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system and a look ahead to Monday’s action.

State College won its finals opener on the road, setting up two chances at home to win one. Co-Players of the Day Steven Farinaro and Andy Young led the way.

Results from game played Sunday, September 11th.

State College 3 at Hudson Valley 0

The Spikes struck against the Renegades’ bullpen, taking game one of the best-of-three New York-Penn League Championship series, 3-0.  Since State College (1-0) holds home field advantage throughout the playoffs, games two and three take place at Medlar Field, the latter game if necessary.

State College’s Steven Farinaro and Hudson Valley right-hander Noel Rodriguez dueled to a draw through five frames but Rodriguez was pulled after that point, leaving the fate of the Tampa Bay affiliate in the hands of their bullpen.

Held to just one hit over five, the visitors pounced on righty J.D. Busfield (L, 1-1) immediately.  Andy Young opened with a double, scoring easily on Vince Jackson’s triple.  Jeremy Martinez, the third batter of the inning, greeted Busfield with a line drive RBI single to right, putting State College up 2-0 after six.

Young came to the plate the next frame with runners at the corners and one gone.  He singled off Busfield, driving in Elier Rodriguez (single) and driving Busfield from the game.  Young and Martinez each had two of the team’s eight hits, in four and three at bats, respectively.  Martinez drew a free pass.

Meanwhile on the mound, Farinaro (W, 1-0) was pitching a gem.  The 21-year-old held the Renegades to two hits and two walks over six.  The righty threw 48 of his 79 pitches for strikes, garnering six ground- and eight fly- ball outs.  He fanned one.  It took Max Almonte 30 pitches (21 strikes) to complete the final three innings.  Almonte gave up two hits with five groundball outs and one K.

Monday’s game:  vs. Hudson Valley (0-1), 7:05 pm ET, Jordan DeLorenzo (0-0, 0.00)
