Though the St. Louis Cardinals instructional league camp was closed early due to Hurricane Matthew, plenty was accomplished beforehand. In my visit there last week, I took hundreds of photos, with some of the following among my favorites.
Randy Arozarena was an infielder and outfielder in Cuba and Mexico, but the Cardinals are having the 21-year-old concentrate on the outfield.
Here, Arozarena takes an at-bat.
Starlin Balbuena played the hot corner for the Gulf Coast League Cardinals champions, leading the team in RBI.
So did mate Junior Fernandez.
Though it did not draw a lot of attention, catcher Andrew Knizner did a fine job with Johnson City’s title team.
Bryce Denton may have changed positions defensively, from third to the outfield, but his focus on hitting remains firm.
Top 2016 draftee Delvin Perez takes one for the team. (Perez is also pictured in the lead photo.)
Jake Woodford had a solid season at Peoria, strongest earlier on.
Lefty reliever Chandler Hawkins finished 2015 with Johnson City and 2016 at Double-A Springfield.
Catcher Jeremy Martinez joined the Cards in the fourth round of the 2016 draft from USC and became a New York-Penn League All-Star.
As a professional, Martinez continued his career pattern of drawing more walks than striking out.
Chris Chinea has a middle of the lineup bat and can play a good first base along with catching.
Ramon Santos went seven innings in Johnson City's Appalachian League finals opener.
