Wednesday’s St. Louis Cardinals prospect highlights from the Arizona Fall League and a look ahead to Thursday’s action.

In the second game for Glendale in the first week of AFL games, three Cardinals saw action, including starting pitcher Austin Gomber, who earned his first win.

Glendale Desert Dogs 7 at Mesa Solar Sox 1

St. Louis Cardinals prospect and Springfield hurler Austin Gomber made his AFL debut in this decisive victory over the Mesa Solar Sox.  Gomber tossed three scoreless innings, fanning five and walking two, earning the win. Gomber gave up only one hit, a single in the second inning to Blue Jays’ prospect and Mesa first baseman Ryan McBloom.  No other Cardinals pitcher appeared in this contest.

Cardinals hitters did not fare as well. Carson Kelly and Paul DeJong were in the starting lineup with Kelly as the designated hitter and DeJong starting at shortstop.  Kelly went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts, while DeJong went 0-for-4, also fanning twice.
