A two-run double by Osvaldo Abreu (WSH) gave Glendale (2-1) a 5-4 walk-off victory over Surprise (1-1) Thursday evening.
Abreu’s liner to left scored right fielder Ramon Laureano (HOU) and Danny Hayes (CWS) who opened the ninth with back-to-back singles. After a swinging K by St. Louis’ Harrison Bader, a wild pitch put two in scoring position for Abreu and the shortstop came through. Laureano and Abreu each compiled two of the team’s 11 hits.
That made a winner out of right-hander Jacob Dorris (HOU), the Desert Dogs’ sixth hurler of the night. Dorris worked around a lead-off single and missed catch error by Abreu that put two on with none out in the ninth. No Cardinals’ pitchers saw action.
Bader was the Cardinals organization’s only position player taking part in the game. The left fielder, batting seventh, got the team on the board with a solo shot in the second, cutting Glendale’s deficit to 3-1 after two. The bomb came with two gone against lefty Stephen Gonsalves (MIN) and was Bader’s only hit in four at bats. He fanned twice.
Friday’s game: at Scottsdale (1-2), 6:35 pm MST, TBA
