Reliever Ryan Sherriff allowed the tie-breaking tally, leading to a 6-3 Glendale loss to Peoria (4-1-2).
Sherriff (L, 0-1) recorded just two outs in the seventh, giving up a lead-off double, and a base-on-balls before the first runner scored via a one-out fielding error by third baseman Trey Michalczewski (CWS). The Memphis southpaw departed after notching a swinging K and took the loss, his first AFL decision, to go with an 11.57 ERA in early action.
Glendale (2-5) struck first when first baseman Cody Bellinger (LAD) launched a solo shot in the initial inning. But the Javelinas answered right back with a score in the bottom of the frame against the starter, Cardinal Austin Gomber. Gomber permitted a lead-off double, single and RBI wild pitch before recording his first out.
The left-hander tossed a one-two-three second and was handed a 3-1 lead to start the third, a lead he did not hold. Instead, Gomber permitted a two-out single before serving up a bomb that re-tied the score at three all. Gomber threw 56 pitches over four innings, 34 for strikes, allowing four hits, a walk and striking out four. Through two starts, the Springfield hurler’s AFL ERA is 3.86.
The Desert Dogs managed just six hits, including a single by catcher Carson Kelly. The cleanup hitter knocked in one via a sacrifice fly in four plate appearances. Lead-off batter Harrison Bader went 0-for-2 with a walk and run scored (in the third via Kelly’s sac fly) but was pinch hit for to begin the seventh.
Wednesday’s game: vs. Salt River (4-2), 6:35 pm MST, Francis Martes (0-0. 16.20) (HOU)
