On Wednesday evening, the Desert Dogs dropped their sixth game in eight tries, falling at home to Salt River, 4-2.
Glendale tied the contest in the fifth at two each, but the visitors put two more on the board in the seventh to retake the lead for good. The mound victim in the seventh was Cardinals lefty Corey Littrell, who had tossed four scoreless innings prior to this game.
Littrell got into trouble from the start, walking the leadoff man, the number eight hitter, and balking him to second. The number nine batter, shortstop Dylan Moore of the Braves system, went deep to left-center for the two-run shot that tagged Littrell with his first AFL runs allowed and his first loss.
Glendale number three batter, designated hitter Carson Kelly, went 0-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. Shortstop Paul DeJong singled and fanned twice in four at-bats from the fifth spot in the order. Harrison Bader pinch hit in the ninth and struck out.
New AFL Hall of Famer
Prior to the Wednesday night’s game at Scottsdale Stadium, outfielder Matt Holliday was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame. Among those on hand to celebrate was his manager with the St. Louis Cardinals from 2009-2011, Tony La Russa.
Holliday played for the AFL's Mesa Solar Sox in 2002 and 2003 while coming up through the Colorado Rockies system.
Thursday’s game: vs. Mesa, Nolan Sanburn (CWS) (0-0, 0.00) 12:35 MST.
