Friday’s St. Louis Cardinals prospect highlights from the Arizona Fall League and a look ahead to Saturday’s action.

Cardinals pitchers Rowan Wick and Ryan Sherriff each tossed a scoreless inning in Glendale’s Friday loss.

Results from the game played Friday, October 28th.

Salt River 4 at Glendale 1

Glendale (5-11) fell prey to the long ball, dropping a 4-1 home decision to Salt River on Friday afternoon.

Desert Dogs starter Austin Voth (L, 0-2) (WSH) only gave up two hits in his five-inning stint but both were home runs with a runner aboard.  The righty began the game by hitting the batter before serving up a bomb to the next man up.  Voth did the very same thing in the fourth, only the plunked batter was with one gone and the home run was with two away.

Rowan Wick and Ryan Sherriff were the final two of a quartet of Glendale relievers holding the Rafters scoreless over the final four frames.  Wick tossed a one-two-three eighth against the top of Salt River’s order, striking out one and getting two fly outs.  It was Wick’s third straight scoreless appearance after yielding a tally in each of his first three efforts.

Sherriff worked around a two-out single, recording three groundball outs.  The southpaw retired all three right-handed batters but gave up a single to the lone lefty faced.

The home team’s hitters were limited to just three hits, all singles.  Shortstop Paul DeJong had one of them, going 1-for-3 with a strikeout and his first stolen base.  That extended his modest hitting streak to six games.  Defensively, DeJong took part in a 4-6-3 double play that finished the third.

Carson Kelly, the only other St Louis prospect to participate, was hitless in four at bats out of the three hole.  Acting as the team’s designated hitter, Kelly grounded out, 5-3, in his first at bat, popped out to second to begin the fourth, fanned swinging with a runner on second to end the sixth and lined out sharply to center for the second out in the ninth.

Saturday’s game:  at Salt River (9-6), 12:35 pm MST, Austin Gomber (2-0, 3.00)
