Cardinals Double-A pitcher Austin Gomber started for Glendale in its 6-3 victory over Salt River Saturday afternoon. Gomber tossed five innings, giving up only one unearned run on two hits. The left hander struck out five and walked one to earn his third AFL win against no losses and drop his ERA to 2.12 over four starts.
After Gomber retired the first two batters in the first inning, the third-place hitter reached on an error. Gomber gave up a single and a walk to the next two hitters to load the bases, and hit the next batter with a pitch to allow his only run of the game.
The lefty gave up his second hit in the second inning, a double to right field, before retiring the next two batters to end the inning. In his final three innings of work, Gomber retired all nine batters to finish with a streak of 11 straight outs. Gomber threw 80 pitches in his five innings, 53 for strikes, for a game score of 66.
None of the other six Cardinals prospects on the Glendale roster, hitter or pitcher, saw action in this game.
