Austin Gomber (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Friday’s St. Louis Cardinals prospect highlights from the Arizona Fall League and a look ahead to Saturday’s action.

On Friday, Austin Gomber, Carson Kelly and three other Cardinals led Glendale to its fourth consecutive win.

Results from the game played Friday, November 4th.

Glendale 5 at Peoria 1

Austin Gomber fanned five in 5 2/3 one-run innings as Glendale (10-12) downed Peoria, 5-1, running their winning streak to four, all with good-luck charm St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Harrison Bader carrying out the Desert Dogs’ lineup card.

Gomber (W, 4-0) held the Javelinas (11-8) to just one run, coming in the second when the lefty yielded a lead-off double and one-out RBI single.  Gomber gave up five hits in all with four free passes issued and threw 57 of his 92 pitches for strikes.  The Florida native has allowed one earned run or less in four of his five starts and lowered his AFL ERA to 1.99.

Corey Littrell, the fourth Desert Dogs hurler of the day, tossed a clean ninth.  The lefty, already The Cardinal Nation’s winter ball Pitcher of the Week, surrendered a lead-off single but retired the next three on a pop out to short, swinging K and ground out – a right/left/right/right batting sequence.

Glendale jumped on Orioles left-hander Tanner Scott (L, 0-2) for three in the first.  The big hit was compliments of number three hitter Carson Kelly, who doubled to left, plating two.  The designated hitter advanced to third on a single by first baseman Danny Hayes (CWS) and scored when Hayes was nailed in an attempted steal of second.

The visitors added an unearned score in the fifth and capped the scoring with a seventh inning tally in which all three Cardinals hitters participated.  Kelly lined a double to center with one down, and he moved up a base via Paul DeJong’s single to left with two gone.  An infield single by Harrison Bader brought Kelly across.

Kelly, one of three Glendale players with two hits each, doubled twice in four at bats with a base-on-balls, two runs scored and two knocked in. With 14 RBI in just 14 games, Kelly is second the AFL.

DeJong and Bader, the five and six batters, each singled once in four and five at bats, respectively.  DeJong worked a free pass and struck out twice.  Bader drove in one, fanning once.

Saturday’s game:  AFL Fall Stars Game, 5:00 P.M. Arizona Time, East vs. West on MLB Network. Kelly, DeJong, Bader and Rowan Wick are all on the West Roster.
