AFL West 12, AFL East 4

The Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game took place at Surprise Stadium on Saturday night, with all four St. Louis Cardinals prospects invited playing for the AFL West team.  On the position player side, two Cardinals were in the starting lineup and a third appeared as a pinch hitter and defensive replacement.

Outfielder Harrison Bader started in left field but moved to right field and then to center field, as he played in all nine innings for the West.  Carson Kelly was the starting catcher and played five innings before being replaced in the sixth.  Infielder Paul DeJong entered the game in the sixth as a pinch hitter and remained in the game to play shortstop.

In addition to the three Cardinals position players, pitcher Rowan Wick opened the eighth and pitched a very quick 2/3 of an inning.

At the plate, Bader was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.  The outfielder also struck out twice.  Bader doubled to left in the second inning, and came around to score on a RBI single by Kelly.  Kelly also came home later that frame.

Bader singled in his next at bat in the third inning.  A sacrifice fly by Kelly plated a run and advanced Bader to third, from where he scored on a single. For the game, Kelly was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.

In the sixth inning, Paul DeJong pinch hit for the West’s starting shortstop and was struck by a pitch.  The infielder then scored on a home run by the next West batter, Dodgers first baseman Cody Bellinger.  DeJong remained in the game at shortstop before being again hit by a pitch in his second plate appearance in the eighth inning. This time, he was stranded at second base when Bader flied out to right field to end the inning.

Wick began the eighth inning on the mound. The right hander induced two ground outs to the first two hitters on four pitches total and was pulled for another reliever as the managers worked to clear their benches. Wick’s fastball was measured at 96 and his curve was just 78 mph.

On defense, both Bader and DeJong had a putout, Bader in center field, and DeJong at shortstop.  Wick also had a putout on a screaming one-hopper launched back to him.
